Constellation Tea Cup
Constellation Tea Cup
A spin-off of the original Anchor Tea Cup, these Constellation Tea Cups are adorned with suns, moons, and planets as well as a hand painted constellation. Every handmade tea cup has a narrow notch to slip the string of a tea bag through which ends in a small circular cut out. The inside of every cup is glazed in a dark temmoku brown-black that glitters like the night sky, and the exterior is hand brushed in an ombre effect from dark blue to pale ice blue. Cups hold approximately 10 oz of liquid.
Constellations featured:
Balatik: A traditional Filipino hunter trap. The constellation is set within the larger Orion constellation. Balatik is one of the major constellations in pre-colonial Filipino astronomy. It is seen as Balatik to the Tagalog, Maguindanao, Bikol, Antique, and Bagobo people, and as Seretar, a hunter, to the people of Mindanao. It’s presence in the sky was a sign of the beginning of the kaingin period of planting, the time where the land was slashed and burned to prepare the soil for a new planting cycle.
Draconis: The Latin word meaning “dragon,” this constellation is Greek in origin and was catalogued by Ptolmey in the 2nd century. It represents either Ladon, the dragon that guarded the gardens of the Hesperides who was killed by Herakles during his twelve labors, or a dragon that was part of the race of Gigantes who fought the Olympic gods for a decade before being defeated by Athena and thrown into the sky.
Polaris: Commonly known in the US as the “BIg Dipper” and “Little Dipper,” Ursa Major and Ursa Minor are the Great Bear and Little Bear of Roman cosmology. The north star, polaris, is located on Ursa Minor’s tail.
